Dr. Hawra Al-Ghafli is an Assistant Professor specializing in infectious diseases, host-pathogen interactions, bioinformatics, and computational biology. She earned her BSc and MSc degrees with Honors from the University of Manchester (UK). She subsequently won a highly competitive, fully funded PhD scholarship from the University of Liverpool (UK), where she completed her doctoral degree in 2023. Following her PhD, Dr. Al-Ghafli undertook postdoctoral research at the University of Glasgow (UK), focusing on human parasitic infections and extensively applying bioinformatics approaches to the analysis of single-cell sequencing datasets. She then worked as an Assistant Professor for two years prior to joining KFUPM.
Dr. Al-Ghafli’s research sits at the intersection of molecular microbiology and parasitology, transcriptomics, bioinformatics, and machine learning, with a strong emphasis on dissecting host-pathogen and host-parasite interactions to drive the discovery of novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets. She has published multiple high-impact peer-reviewed articles and has demonstrated strong leadership in the design and execution of funded research projects. Also, Dr. Al-Ghafli holds an active Saudi Commission for Health Specialties (SCFHS) license as a Senior Specialist in Microbiology and Parasitology, which further complements and enhances her academic and research profile.
